Disappearance Rehearsal

On Monday night, I went to watch about an hour of the Disappearance rehearsal.  When I arrived, the rehearsal had already begun but I think that I only missed a small bit of the beginning.  However, this made me a little confused and some aspects of the play were hard for me to follow due to missing some crucial plot points.  Even with this considered, I was still able to really enjoy the part of the play that I did get to watch.  The actors I saw were very talented and there was a lot of humor in the performance which I really enjoyed.

This play incorporated Noh with western theater.  There were aspects of both types of performances in the play.  I did however pay more attention to the aspects of Noh that I saw portrayed.  First, I noticed that the background performers that make up the chorus/ musical section were all dressed in Asian-style clothing.  Another of the more obvious incorporations of  Noh was that there was a section of the stage that consisted of a raised platform.  Also, some of the actors on this raised platform held the position of kneeling with all their weight resting on their legs under them.  I know that we have practiced this position many times in class and to see some of the actors do it for so long was amazing.  There was one gentleman in particular that I noticed holding this position the entire time I was there and he only broke it to stand and deliver his lines.  He was one of the actors that spoke in a foreign language during the performance along with others who did so.  I really liked the addition of other languages in the play and thought it made the performance more unique and interesting to watch.

Overall, I really enjoyed what I was able to see of the performance.  Even though I did not watch it all, I would recommend it for others in the class to go see.  I am gonna try my best to go to one of the showings so I am able to see the performance in its entirety.  I look forward to seeing the rest of the story and what other incorporates of Noh there are.
