Midterm sharing felt like the
ultimate trial in practicing what we as a class had learned so far for the
first half of the semester. Though we
had experienced theatre through lectures and group exercises, for the first
time we were allowed to create a short excerpt for the class.
For our performance, Jasmine, Tatiana and I decided to
create a play in which we could share what we learned in the class. The main plot of our play was of the
importance of banjar. Through the dance
movements and hand motions we learned in class, our group was able to create a
performance in which we shared our thoughts on the crucial importance of being
able to appreciate one another.
We personally created masks for this performance, which was
another fun bonding time for us!
Out of all the midterm
performances, I enjoyed the piece about the ancient king who dreamed of the
dancing nymphs. This is because this
story is one of my favorite encounters with Indonesian theatre. Yue and Cynthia resemble true nymphs as their
movements were very ethereal and delicate.
Bruno did a good job at possessing the qualities of the king throughout
the play. All of the performances were
very enjoyable and showed how hard each team worked at displaying an aspect of Asian
theatre.
Though we were slightly confused at what we should present
at first, everything came together at the end and we enjoyed sharing it with
our banjar.
